Air France Flight 152 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_France_Flight_152 Air France Flight 152 was a scheduled international passenger flight originated from Paris and was destined for Tehran, including stopovers in Rome and Beirut. The aircraft completed the first leg of its journey quite uneventfully, landing in Rome without any incidents. It took time to refuel before it took off a few hours for its next destination; Beirut. On the way to Beirut, the plane was cruising at around 17,000 feet when one of its engines, engine Number 3, started to vibrate quite violently. The shaking was so violent that the entire engine detached from the aircraft itself. It even hit and damaged the fuselage when it detached, before plummeting into, fortunately, the dark ocean below. Down one engine, the four-engine Lockheed L-749A Constellation was in big trouble, but at least still had 3 more working engines, making it theoretically possible for the aircraft to make a safe emergency landing on the nearest runway. But, it didn’t get the chance to. The damage created by the loss of Engine 3 was so great that soon after, Engine 4 also started to shake violently, causing the pilots to lose control over it. They were clearly in dire straits as the aircraft wasn’t designed to fly on two engines alone. Lacking power, the aircraft rapidly started to lose altitude. At this point, the crew sent three separate distress calls, then finally decided to make an extremely risky water landing. They chose a site off the coast of Fethiye in South-Western Turkey after spotting the flashing light of the Kızılada Lighthouse During the descent the flight attendants informed the passengers about the situation, calmed them down and instructed them to put on life jackets. Fortunately, the sea was very calm at the time and the pilots were able to execute a flawless emergency water landing. The passengers and the crew promptly evacuated the airplane using the four emergency exits, and initially remained on the wings of the floating aircraft for over an hour before it finally sank. There were a total of 42 people on board the plane and despite the amazing landing, 4 elderly people still lost their lives due to drowning. However, t6he casualties would have been a lot more if it weren’t for the perfect landing executed by the pilots. Number 4. Garuda Indonesia Flight 421 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garuda_Indonesia_Flight_421 Garuda Indonesia Flight 421 was a scheduled domestic flight operated by Indonesian flag carrier Garuda Indonesia travelling a relatively short 388 mile trip from Ampenan to Yogyakarta. The plane, which was a Boeing 737-3Q8 and is the first 737 to be added to the Garuda Indonesia fleet. The flight started quite normally and was already on the approach to its destination when it encountered by a very uncharacteristically strong thunderstorm. The size of the storm can be visibly seen ahead of the aircraft and was being detected by the plane’s radar, but the crew still decided to fly through it anyway. The pilot saw a chance to squeeze the huge plane into a relatively calm gap in between two storm cells, which sounded like a pretty good idea at the time compared to the alternative of circling around the storm. In hindsight, i think everybody on board should have opted to circle around and just have the flight slightly delayed. They made for the gap but as soon as they entered, the aircraft was bombarded with heavy rain and hail. Just a minute and a half later, as the plane was descending to 19,000 feet, both of the plane’s engines experienced a flameout.
