This decision challenges long-standing policies that aimed to promote diversity by considering race as part of a holistic evaluation of applicants. Education and civil rights groups argue that this ruling will worsen inequality, as several states that have already banned race-conscious admissions policies have experienced difficulty in enrolling diverse freshman classes. Although the Supreme Court did not explicitly overturn previous cases supporting affirmative actions, the majority opinion rendered them largely ineffective. Chief Justice John Roberts argued that categorizing students by race and giving preferences to Black and Hispanic applicants constitutes unlawful discrimination. However, Roberts emphasized that universities can still consider how an applicant's experiences with race affected their life, as long as it does not amount to explicit consideration of race. Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented, with Sotomayor describing the ruling as closing the door of opportunity for students of all races. The decision was hailed by the group Students for Fair Admissions, who have been monitoring admissions procedures and threatened litigation against universities that do not comply. Harvard, one of the schools involved in the case, announced its commitment to adhering to the court's decision while seeking ways to maintain its values in light of the new precedent.
